ETF protests against violation of workers’ rights by UPS Turkey
2 July 2010
On Thursday 1 July 2010, an ETF delegation participated at an international solidarity action in Istanbul, Turkey, to protest against the violation of fundamental workers’ rights by UPS Turkey. Since April of this year, the UPS employer is intimidating and dismissing workers for their trade union membership and for embarking on a campaign by ITF affiliate Türkiye Motorlu Tasit Isçileri Sendikasi (TÜMTIS) to organise the workplace.
“As a candidate country for EU membership, Turkey has to take profound measures to protect the workers’ fundamental social rights and prevent such disputes. The ETF will raise this matter with the European Parliament and the Prime Minister of Turkey,” ETF General Secretary Eduardo Chagas stated at the picket line in Istanbul.
Among others, the ETF delegation condemned, together with members of the ITF and UNI Global Union, the reported attacks on company employees. “Turkey is of great strategic importance as a logistic turntable and corridor between Europe and Asia,” ETF Political Secretary for Logistics, Myriam Chaffart said. “It is therefore even more important to show international solidarity with the UPS employees and call the concerned Turkish and European authorities to publicly denounce such practices and safeguard the workers’ social rights,” she continued.
The ETF will take the necessary steps to address this issue at European level and calls its affiliates to express their support with TÜMTIS and UPS Turkey workers in their struggle to defend their fundamental social rights.
