ETF seminar formulates recommendations for European inland waterways’ policy
25 May 2010
What is the use of an effective social control on illegal and undeclared work, working time and working conditions in the inland waterways (IWT) sector? What lessons can the European Inland navigation take from an international comparison with the maritime sector? These were the premises of the ETF seminar organised in Strasbourg on 27 and 28 April 2010.
Guidelines on social advancements
Based on the successes of previous annual seminars, the ETF IWT Section organised this seminar under the theme “EU Social framework of IWT – The International influences & future strategies”. Speakers from ILO, national trade unions, employers and national authorities drafted the current picture of the sector. More than 40 trade union officials and rank and file members from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania and Switzerland participated to the various workshops.
The participants of the seminar designed guidelines for an international and European policy regarding the European inland waterway transport sector. The outcome of this seminar will form the base for an ETF policy paper that will stipulate concrete recommendations on social advancements, addressed to the European policy makers to facilitate the development of a legislative framework for the sector.
