European Demonstration of Railway Workers on 17 December 2009 in Brussels
16 December 2009
On 17 December 2009 the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) is calling for a European demonstration of railway workers in Brussels. On 17 December the Council of Transport Ministers is meeting to adopt Council conclusions on “A sustainable future for transport”.
The ETF expects about 3.000 to 5.000 railway workers demonstrating in the streets of Brussels. Delegations from numerous European countries will participate.
The European railway workers are demonstrating against the ongoing liberalisation, privatisation and fragmentation of the railway sector. Restructuring of the traditional railway companies had already cost hundreds of thousands of railway jobs in Europe and the current economic crisis is used by the railway companies as a context for further deep cost cutting and restructuring measures. Liberalisation of national rail passenger services is on the agenda of the European Commission.
The ETF asked the Swedish Council Presidency to meet a delegation of ETF representatives on 17 December. We will hand over a symbolic “pré-avis de grève” (pre-announcement of strike) to the European Transport Ministers, announcing more important actions in spring next year.
The demonstration will start between 12h00 and 12h30 at the Boulevard Roi Albert II and finish with a podium at Petit Rue de la Loi (between Rond Point Schuman and the entrance to the Cinquantenaire Park) at 15h00 latest. Speakers will be the President of the ETF Railway Section Guy Greivelding (Luxembourg) and representatives of the Belgian railway trade unions.
