ETF Expresses Its Solidarity with Honduran Workers

8 July 2009

The ETF expresses its solidarity with Honduran workers who are suffering disproportionately due to civil unrest within the country after the military coup d’etat on 28 June 2009.

President Zelaya acted well within his boundaries as leader of a democracy. The military’s response to the President’s call for a constitutional referendum has been to forcefully assume power, menace the population with widespread arrests, impose curfews, and kidnap and deport the President himself. Since the coup on the 28 June, the President has tried to return without success: his plane was prevented from landing on Honduran soil this past Sunday, July 5.

Honduran trade unionists have demonstrated their outrage against this illegal and violent take-over by taking to the streets en masse, in spite of horrid weather conditions, and potentially grave repercussions. The ETF applauds the collective efforts of the ITF and ITUC who have offered their support to all their Honduran brothers and sisters by calling for a restoration of law and order within Honduran borders.

The ETF stands by Honduran workers during this time of political turmoil and is hopeful that the state of affairs will be speedily rectified so that civil society can be spared from further strife.
