This year’s ITF summer school is the first to be specifically aimed for young workers. The ITF summer school has been running for 12 years. The summer school plays an important role in strengthening the international perspective of union leaders and activists. A report of the summer school can be found below.
The summer school will cover issues related to:
• Transport restructuring
• Changes in employment including the growth of precarious work
• Organising
• Strategic campaigning
• Networking
Many unions are experiencing the impact of neo-liberal policies through privatisation, permanent restructuring, casualisation, subcontracting and outsourcing. Young workers in particular are more vulnerable to these new employment practices. The summer school will look at how young workers can strengthen their unions’ responses to neo-liberal policies.
This focus forms part of the ITF’s organising globally programme, which aims to build union organisation and the active participation of young workers.
The summer schools have been hugely successful and continue to provide a unique opportunity for affiliates from all regions and industrial sectors to share experiences and explore new approaches.
The summer school aims to:
• Provide training on international issues to leaders and activists in ITF-affiliated trade unions.
• Discuss new ideas laying the foundation for future campaigns and organising initiatives.
• Promote solidarity between young activists in transport unions.
Who should attend the school?
Young trade unionists, around the age of 35 years and under, who are active in their unions and keen to be more involved in international work.
Participants should have a good understanding of trade union issues and challenges. They should also have some knowledge of the ITF and its activities.
The summer school programme will be in English only, so participants must be proficient in English.
Places are limited to one participant per union. We also try to achieve regional and sectoral representation. Young women participants are especially encouraged to apply for a place at the summer school. We have a target of 50% women’s participation.

The summer school is supported by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES).
