Trade unions are facing more and more change each day - very few have a clear picture of what changes are going on across the union entity, how they interact with one another and the consequence of the entire portfolio of change. Operating without this view might work for a short period of time but eventually the union will feel the strain and collision of these many initiatives. The time has come for a structured approach and set of tools for managing a portfolio of change that the union faces in a global era
The seminar held in Nairobi from 13-16 January 2009, ascertained that education and a training toolkit lays the foundation for effective mapping and managing the entire portfolio of change going on within a union. Education is a powerful tool for the leadership in providing a foundation for making more effective decisions about the future of our unions and much more likely in the portfolio of change we launch.
To me it is a new breakthrough and amazing to see new young worker educators at this seminar. The seminar brought together a new group of educators into the ITF educators network. It is normal and a consequence of living in a complex world of trade unions. But the world of achievement has always belonged to the optimist.
The toolkit presented was auspicious and easy to apply, long with a full set of tools for managing education activities.
In my view the depiction of this workshop was not all about “finding yourself but all about creating yourself".
Daniel Gebeyehu, President, Transport & Communication Workers’ Industrial Federation
Introducing the need for trade union education and skills to deliver, was the focus of a 4 day workshop in Lebanon for Arab world unions.
The Training Trainers’ seminar was held from 01 - 04 December 2008, with 36 unionists from 8 countries - Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Algeria, Yemen, Morocco, Bahrain and Lebanon.
The seminar used participatory methods to train educators and build their skills enabling them to plan, design and implement education activities in their own unions. Other important subjects like campaigning, organising and collective bargaining will be introduced to them in future activities.
Building confidence to conduct education took the form of group activities with participants presenting 15 minutes education sessions each, and utilising what they have learnt in the workshop. Each session was evaluated by other participants as well as the ITF facilitators, to help participants improve their techniques and skills as educators. Baker Khundakji, Arab World Education Coordinator.
