Arab World
For the past 5 years, the ITF has substantially increased its engagement with unions in the Arab world. The ITF has continued to develop an active programme of education activities for transport unions in the Arab world.
Current project/s:
Strengthening union organisation and solidarity in the Arab World
Education has played an important role in building the ITF’s work in the Arab World. This project mainly involves running seminars for different transport sectors.
The objectives of the project are:
- To enable affiliates to share information and experiences on common industrial issues including transport restructuring;
- To stimulate discussion and critical thinking on trade union strategies in response to restructuring and changing employment relationships;
- To develop shared organising goals and targets to build union strength at national and local levels;
- To strengthen the skills of union activists to plan and implement effective organising campaigns;
- To build the capacity of unions in the Arab world to actively participate in global and regional policy-making meetings, campaigns, conferences and organising programmes of ITF industrial sections;
- To promote and strengthen the involvement of women and young transport workers in Arabic unions and ITF industrial, women’s and youth’s activities.

Previous projects include:
Building union capacity in Bahrain and Oman
This project develops the organizing and collective bargaining capacity of port and aviation unions in Bahrain and Oman. Activities include workplace programmes providing basic trade union education for different occupational groups in activation and ports. This project is supported by ACILS.
The objectives of the project are:
- To strengthen recruitment and workers' participation in unions.
- To develop basic trade union skills of leaders and members
- To build sustainable union structures.
- To strengthen trade union representation and grievance handling.
Strengthening union organising and solidarity in the Arab world
This project, supported by the FES, involves running sector specific education seminars, including women's seminar with the following objectives:
- To enable affiliates to share information and experiences on common industrial issues including transport restructuring;
- To stimulate discussion and critical thinking on trade union strategies in response to restructuring and changing employment relationships; in particular, developing common organising goals and targets to build union power at a national level;
- To build the skills of unions to plan and implement effective organising campaigns;
- To build the capacity of unions in the Arab world to actively participate in global and regional policy-making meetings, campaigns, conferences and organising programmes of ITF Industrial Section;
- To promote and strengthen the involvement of women transport workers in Arabic unions and ITF industrial and women’s activities.
