Framework for African aviation wins approval

8 Agosto 2006

Delegates at yesterday’s African aviation workshop endorsed the first ever framework for civil aviation across the continent, designed to help build a healthy aviation sector and promote workers’ interests

Debating a policy paper that was formulated during a number of earlier meetings involving African civil aviation union representatives, participants highlighted the issues of privatisation and security as well as the importance of facilitating sub-regional bargaining forums.

They also expressed the importance of working together in the region: “I call on African colleagues to have this cooperation to benefit from information sharing, especially as civil aviation is of major importance in Africa because of the difficulties with other modes of transport,” commented Shahata Mohamed Shahata (Egypt).

Jimi Masege of the Aviation and Allied Workers’ Union in Kenya added: “Investors are being given a free hand in bringing in bad practices. We can fight this by coordinating and comparing collective bargaining agreements in their home countries with our own.”

Several delegates raised the issue of insufficient representation on the section committee, outlining particularly the fact that there was no African or Arab seat. They also called for recognition for young workers.
