What is your job?
I deal with the international part of civil aviation.
What does it involve?
It is an exchange. You learn from other cultures, you learn from different ways of conceiving unions and their struggles.
Why are you here?
Because Congress is a very important part of our international union work. We are here to decide the new political direction for the four years coming and to look at the job we have already done.
What do you like about being at Congress?
It is my first time in South Africa, so I am glad to be here.
What do you think has been the most interesting thing so far?
I was impressed by the South African transport government representative on Wednesday. She was actually giving us a union speech – talking about public transport that should be available to everybody, and putting the worker in the middle of the picture. I think it is a brand new thing for us to hear politics talked about this way. I just hope she meant it!
Could a speech like that be helpful to you back home?
We are going to get a copy of her speech and send it to our minister of transport.
What are the big issues for aviation workers in France right now?
We are working on the groundhandling directive issued by the European Commission and also the transfer of personnel. This is one of the main problems we have, because most of the airlines are or may be outsourcing. The very big and bad consequence is that the workers are losing their jobs or being transferred to jobs with very bad conditions, losing seniority, losing wage levels and working conditions, and all this impacts on safety. And we believe the airline business is getting more and more insecure because of the social dumping that is going on. So we believe we need solidarity and a strong union to fight this. It is not going to be only a lobby matter, it has to be a fight.
What do you get out of attending Congress?
We are working here for solidarity, we get to meet people, to organise ourselves a bit more, to participate in debates, we try to have people from every sector represented at all meetings everywhere, in order to participate and help the solidarity grow. That is the basis of a union, solidarity.
What does organising globally mean to you?
Organising globally – means that every worker has a right to be represented and to defend his working conditions, and the more international we can become, the stronger we can become.
