Airline Alliances

The section continues to respond to the structural changes taking place in the industry, and in particular the development of global airline alliances. The section has given a priority to facilitating meetings between the trade unions organising in the airlines within these global airline alliances.

The Section Conferences have prioritised the coordination of trade unions within global alliances. Thus, alliance specific information is being collated concerning comparative working and social conditions within each alliance, as is work on the development of Codes of Conduct and Social Responsibilities.

In order to further encourage cooperation and information exchange among the respective unions, 'co-ordinator' positions have been created and representatives from affiliated unions have been elected.

The Section is aware of the fact that there are numerous airlines which are still unaligned. Unions representing members in airlines which do currently not belong to any of the global alliances are invited to contact the Secretariat about possible ways to cooperate and communicate whenever their respective carrier is considering joining one.

Multinational conglomerates are growing in the sector of charter airlines as well, often involving substantial amounts of capital flow and cross ownership and thus evolving into a different structure than classic alliances. Taking this fact into account, the Section has supported the creation of the first labour coalition in this sector accordingly.

Justice for Pedro Zamora and STEPQ
Join the ITF in calling for justice in Guatemala. Pedro Zamora, General Secretary of the Dockers' union STEPQ, was brutally murdered in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, while driving his two children from the port hospital. Now, other union leaders face similar threats of violence. We must ensure the guilty are brought to justice ¡No hay impunidad! more >>

Ryan-Be-Fair
It is regrettable that unions don't seem to be welcome at Ryanair, because working together with unions does not ruin the business concept of low cost carriers. more >>
