ETF
70 delegates from 21 unions attended a conference in Vienna organised by the ETF and EVA on 27-28 April 2009. The second day of this conference focussed on safety at work and in particular violence in passenger transport. Eddie Dickson represented the ITF at the event. Henrik Horup from Dansk Jernbaneforbund explained the union's framework agreement with the employers based on a zero tolerance policy and unions from Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary and Austria reported on their experiences of violence in the workplace. Sabine Trier, ETF Deputy General Secretary, noted the need for more attention on this issue by all unions.
Peter Tröge of GDBA, Germany reported on a joint survey by unions GDBA and TRANSNET on violence at work. He highlighted that the majority of workers were concerned about the threat of violence at work and that there had been an increase in the number of violent incidents. The majority of incidents were not reported to the authorities and it was important that this changed. He stressed that violence was a social problem and therefore needed government intervention. Collective agreements were needed to support this process. In Germany, hundreds of members of both unions are mixing with the public today to inform them of the unions' concerns arising from the survey and to get the public's views on security. 200 replies have already been collected at one railway station.

Transport workers and users were urged to lobby their Member of Parliament to support the latest Early Day Motion tabled by the RMT Parliamentary Group. The Early Day Motion on assaults on transport workers has so far been signed by 60 Members of Parliament.
