Take a load off ...
Baggage handlers are four times more likely than other workers like them to suffer muscular skeletal injuries.
When these are not formally recognised as industrial injuries - which often happens - baggage handlers can lose out financially as well as facing health issues. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the international body for airlines, recommends that individual bag weight should be restricted to 23 kilos internationally.
Airline unions in Europe are campaigning for the 23 kilo limit to be applied as a strict maximum for hold baggage, and for other measures to be adopted to reduce workers' exposure to heavy lifting.
Follow the "pack less" rule
As part of this campaign, the ETF and the ITF are asking passengers to reduce the amount of hold baggage they pack.
Taking less luggage with you when you fly will lighten your load and help baggage handlers, and if many people follow the "pack less" rule, it will mean aircraft use less fuel and pollute less.
Remember, most airlines charge more for heavier luggage. But it is important to try to reduce the amount you pack - even if you already have less than 23 kilos.
