What unions can do

Organise activities on 28 April 2011 - Workers’ Memorial Day - to highlight this important issue.

  • Tell your members about the potential health risks involved in handling heavy luggage.
  • Tell the public how their luggage may be injuring the people who help them arrive at that beach in the sun or important business meeting.
  • Tell the employers and politicians that it’s time to reduce the risk.
The ITF has produced a poster, baggage stickers and labels to help you do this. Download them here in English, Spanish and French >>

Tell us about your activities, send us pictures and film clips to post on this page via aviation@itfglobal.org

About 28th April - Workers’ Memorial Day

The 28th April is an international day action marked by workers and trade unions around the world to commemorate those who have lost their lives, were injured or fell ill due to unsafe, unhealthy or unsustainable work. This year, the focus of activities is on the role trade unions play in making work safer. Read more here: http://www.ituc-csi.org/save-lives-join-unions-on-this.html

Why PACK LESS

Many workers are involved in getting the public into the air, to their destinations and home again. All along the line, workers are handling luggage – those who check passengers in at the airport, load their suitcases into the plane’s baggage hold and ensure that their hand luggage is safely stowed away in the cabin. However, few people realise that baggage handlers are four times more likely than other workers in similar jobs to suffer muscular skeletal injuries because of the conditions in which they work. When these are not formally recognised as industrial injuries – which often happens – they can lose out financially as well as face health issues. Passengers can help by reducing the amount they pack – even if they already have less than 23 kilos – and it also saves money as most airlines charge for heavier luggage.

Aviation workers explain why baggage weight limits matter, read more here and watch the film here.

What aviation unions want

Unions want governments, aviation companies including airlines, and relevant international institutions to impose a weight limit of 23kg on passenger baggage and individual parcels.
