| LATEST NEWS 7 June 2011 Statement from Paddy Crumlin ITF president Paddy Crumlin on the release of Mansour Osanloo. 2 June 2011 Mansour Osanloo set free Mansour Osanloo, the Iranian bus union leader, was set free today after almost fours years of imprisonment in jail in Iran. 2 June 2011 Osanloo free at last The ITF is delighted to announce that imprisoned trade unionist Mansour Osanloo was today freed from jail in Iran almost four years since his arrest and imprisonment, which set off a storm of international protest. |
Mansour Osanloo is the president and one of the founding members of the Vahed Syndicate, a free trade union representing Tehran's bus workers. Since its inception the ITF-affiliated union has been repressed by the Iranian regime. Its meetings have been violently broken up, its members threatened, beaten and arrested. Mansour Osanloo has been a particular target. Following arrests and attacks on him, in 2007 he was dragged from a Tehran bus. Three months later he was sentenced to five years imprisonment on charges of ‘acting against national security’ and ‘propaganda against the state’; in 2010 another year was added to his sentence. In reality his only ‘crime’ has been to help found a genuinely democratic trade union for his fellow bus drivers. Despite an international campaign to free him and despite his failing health, he remains in jail.
