International Railway Workers' Action Day 2006

Japan
Members of the National Railway Workers' Union of Japan (Kokuro) distributed 103,000 leaflets at major railway stations nationwide. The union called for measures to stamp out railway accidents by delivering leaflets carrying the message 'It is the responsibility of railway operators to secure transport safety'. The activities were joined by a representatives from the Japanese Council of Transport Workers' Unions (ITF-JC). (Email report by Takako Fukuda, ITF)

Under the theme, "Safety - our No.1 priority for 2006", the Japan Railway Trade Union's Confederation (JR Rengo) distributed leaflets at approximately 60 major railway stations nationwide. The union leaflets addressed several issues including: the importance of the ITF Campaign, the need to secure safety for both passengers and workers, the development of environmentally friendly railway and the enhancement of disaster prevention measures. Switzerland
SEV organised a petition against violence in public transport. More than 10,000 signatures were collected and submitted to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. Media coverage of the union's activities was very good. (Email report by Christian Fankhauser)
