Japan
The Japan Confederation of Railway Unions, chose "Safety" and "Opposing Union Oppression" as their main topics for the Action Day - over 2000 members took part. The JRU and its affiliates organised the leafleting of over 50,000 fliers at all the main stations in Tokyo including Shinagawa and Shinjyuku highlighting these topics. The Dockers union supported the railway workers by handing out leaflets. The ITF Tokyo office also took part in the Action day. The unions also organised rallies and gatherings to promote the opposition of the "Profit First" policies of the companies. (Email report by Massa Takahashi)

India
The Northern Railwaymen's Union (affiliated to the AIRF) organised a one-day seminar today on "The Role of Unions in Improving Safety in the Railways". The main guest at the meeting was the General Manager of the Northern Railway, other senior representatives of NR also addressed the meeting highlighting the importance of developing a safety culture in the working of Indian Railways. Br. Shiv Gopal Mishra NRMU President presided over the meeting. Br. J P Chaubey AIRF General Secretary also addressed the gathering. Mahendra Sharma, ITF Asia/Pacific Sub-regional Secretary conveyed greetings and ITF's message referring to the cooperation between AIRF and ITF in creating awareness about safety amongst railway workers in a series of education programmes. More than 300 rail workers and union leaders along with members of the company attended the meeting. (Email report by Mahendra Sharma, ITF Dehli Office)
Australia
The RTBU organised a public rally at Sydney railway station to launch a campaign to remove asbestos materials at suburban rail stations. The union's campaign is supported by several unions including the Australian Services Union, the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union as well as the Asbestos Decease Federation of Australia and local community groups. Eddie Dickson, ITF attended the event. Nick Lewocki, RTBU NSW Branch Secretary thanked the ITF for organising the International Action Day that had been used by the union to launch many successful safety campaigns.
