New Zealand
New Zealand railway workers used the ITF Action Day to 'reach out' to other workers in the transport industry as part of an ongoing campaign to improve solidarity contact and strengthen transport unions' activity. Todd Valster, RMTU Organiser, indicated the plan was another step in an ongoing campaign to encourage workplace contact between transport unionists as most faced similar problems. The exercise was supported by the use of a questionnaire to measure the success of the programme.

Japan

Members of the Japanese union, JRU distributed more than 30,000 leaflets at over 70 railway stations early this morning. The union is also planning to distribute more leaflets to the public during the evening commuter rush hour at a further 80 stations. The union made an appeal to the public against  deterioration of the wage system and working conditions in certain companies.  Some of JRU's affiliate unions made their own banners and their own leaflets. The union also appealed to taxi drivers and port workers working near the stations to fight together against deregulation.  The union's activities have been well received by the public.
