ARGENTINA
The Railway Union of Argentina is using the ITF materials to develop a campaign for the day which they will distribute to members.
Choferes de Camiones in Buenos Aires is collaborating with anti-violence community organisations and legal professionals to host a film screening of “Take my eyes” and an information session for members. The union intends to raise awareness of the issue and to work together to build a world without violence.
BAHRAIN
The DHL Union in Bahrain are setting up a booth within the workplace to promote the ‘Break the Silence, Union Action to Stop Violence’ campaign and engage their members about the issue.
BANGLADESH
The Jatio Rickshaw Sramik League (JRSL) has organised a workers’ rally in Dhaka Capital City on the 25th of November to take action to stop violence against women.
BELGIUM
BTB in Belgium will be working along side ABVV to distribute campaign materials to women dockworkers on the 25th of November to raise awareness of the ‘Break the Silence, Union Action to Stop Violence’ campaign.
BULGARIA
The Federation of Transport Trade Workers in Bulgaria (FTTUB) once again participates actively in the campaign under the motto "Break the Silence!"
The posters and stickers of the campaign "Break the Silence" were posted in public transport companies; in bus stops and train stations, in the administrative buildings of city councils; at the premises of FTTUB's trade unions throughout the country. Read more here>>
CHILE
Volunteer to Seafarers is preparing a full calendar of activities, actions and training on ships and on land for the 25th of November to mark their respect and commitment to eliminating violence against women.
FRANCE
CGT Railway will be displaying posters on union notice boards and disseminating stickers and ribbons at all work sites.
Sytracom will also be using ITF campaign materials in activities that they are organising with members for 25 November.
GHANA
The Ghana Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union, as part of their national women’s programme, are organising a march through the streets of Accra and inviting the press to cover the event.
The Maritime and Dock Workers Union is organising a march through the streets of Tema, activities and a public lecture for their members and the wider community to raise awareness and take action on the issue of violence against women on the 25th of November.
INDIA
The Transport and Dock Workers’ Union of Mumbai, under the guidance of Com. S. R. Kulkarni (President of the union) and Ms. Kalpana Desai (member of the ITF APRC) is organising a workshop on the 25th of November at the Mumbai Port for women and men to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women. They will also distribute the white ribbons at various workplaces to members.
The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR), an affiliate of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), is organising workplace meetings, rallies and workshops in all 16 state capitals across India to educate and activate women members to work towards eliminating violence against women.
The N. F. Railway Mazdoor Union (affiliate of AIRF) is planning a seminar and activities on the issue of violence against women on the 25th of November. They will also be setting up a health check-up facility for women members and their children.
The All India Railwaymen’s Federation plans to raise awareness of violence against women on the 25th of November with colourful activities for union members.
The Paradip Port Workers’ Union is running a workshop during the day on 25th of November and lunch in the conference hall of the union for female and male members. The chief guest for the workshop will be one of the Class-I Officers of the Paradip Port and Adv. Rajendra Parida will be the Chief Speaker. In the evening, Sushree Laxmipriya Mohanty (Vice-President of the union) will be hosting a meeting with members to discuss ways that they can collectively work towards the elimination of violence against women.
The Transport and Dockworkers Union, Kandla will be displaying the campaign posters in prominent locations in all workplaces. They are also planning a one day interactive seminar on the 25th of November for women active members to workshop ways in which they can collectively work towards the elimination of violence against women.
JAMAICA
The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union will be conducting inter-office discussions to develop union action to stop violence.
JORDAN
On 24th of November 2011, The General Union of Air Transport and Tourism, Amman, Jordan organized a special Lecture to mark the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The theme of the lecture was how to eliminate violence at work places and in society, and followed by discussions and questions about the types of violence, and what is considered violence acts; such as discrimination between men and women at work places, as well as carrying the burden of household duties alone.
The facilitator Mrs. Fatma Al Dabbas: lawyer and activist in the women’s rights field warned that there are some people taking advantage of the new technologies like the cell phones and cameras to take the women’s photo’s and use these images in many ways to hurt the women. She also mentioned that most of the laws and regulations are not applied equally on men and women; and that it is considered violence against women.
The delegates represented the royal Jordanian airline women workers; in addition to employees from the General Union of Air Transport and Tourism; Mrs Rana Sweis head of the human resource department in the royal Jordanian also attended the meeting.
All delegates demanded to organise similar lectures and seminars in the future.
KENYA
The Dockworkers Union, Kenya is organising a march on the 25th of November for members to participate in. The march will conclude at a venue where there will be activities, plays and speeches on the issue. The posters, stickers and ribbons will be used on the day and also in publicity for the action.
MAURITIUS
The Airports of Mauritius Employees Union will be raising awareness of the issue of violence against women by hosting a workshop on the issue and asking members to put the campaign posters up in their workplaces.
MEXICO
The Tram of Mexico Alliance is working together with other unions to organise a workshop on the subject of gender based violence for women members to participate in. They have organised specialists in the field and women who have been affected by violence to speak at the workshop. In addition to this workshop, the union will be activating members in workplaces on this issue and disseminating campaign materials.
NICARAGUA
The National Union "Heroes and Martyrs of MTI” will be hosting a talk for women members on the issue of violence against women.
PAKISTAN
The Women’s Wing of the Pakistan Railway Workers Union is holding a seminar for members on the 25th of November in Karachi attended by the main union leadership, divisional, zonal and unit office bearers from all over the country.
PERU
FENTTRAPERU is organising seminars on a wide range of issues for members to participate to mark the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, including: the issue of violence against women, self esteem building, forced labour and child labour.
PUERTO RICO
The Seafarers Union is planning an educational seminar for crew members and the local community on the 25th of November on the issue of violence against women. They are also going to distribute the ITF campaign materials and an educational hand out the union is producing. The event will also try to engage members and the wider community with movie screenings, raffles and games.
RUSSIA
The Trade Union of Railwaymen and Transport Construction Workers of Russia will distribute ITF campaign materials to members and hold workplace meetings to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women.
TOGO
STRANAVITTO will be hosting seminars to educate women and youth members on the issue of violence against women. The union has also commenced research to map what services are available to women affected by violence, where they are located and what level of support they offer. This research and mapping project is intended to educate women on support services available to them and for the union to identify and make links with support services to enable future collaboration.
UNITED KINGDOM
Unite the Union will be planning activities and discussing the issue of violence against women at their regional women’s committee meetings and at their national women’s committee. They are gearing up to the day of action where they will be running a media campaign, circulating leaflets to meetings and hosting meetings with members across all regions.
