Canada

In Toronto, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) organised a demonstration, calling for action in support of Brothers Osanloo and Salehi. 140 people from the unions, human right activists and the Iranian community gathered in front of the Ontario Parliament. They came from Ottawa, Kingston, Oshawa and Hamilton. Speakers were from the Parliament, unions, Amnesty International and the Iranian community. Participants waved flags and signs, demanding an immediate release of the two unionists.  (Email report by Mehdi Kouhestaninejad)

The Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ) sent a letter to the Supreme Religious Leader of Iran condemning the imprisonment of Mansour Osanloo and the continued attack of trade union rights in the country.  The letter was also sent to the ILO and the Ministry for International Relations in Quebec.

USA
Letters from the Teamsters Union and the AFL-CIO as well as the ITF petition were delivered to the Iranian Interest Section in Washington DC by a trade union delegation on 9 August.  They were received by Dr. Messalhi, a representative of the office, who confirmed that the letters and the petition would be forwarded to President Ahmadinejad.  The Teamsters also released a press statement about the global Action Day on 9 August.

Australia
In Canberra, 30 union activists and members from the local Iranian community took part in a rally outside the Iranian Embassy.  The rally, which lasted an hour, was addressed by several trade union representatives including Andrew Thomas (RTBU) and Kim Sattler (Secretary, Australian Capital Territory Trades and Labour Council). Speakers from the Iranian community also spoke.  The ASU was represented at the rally by the ASU Canberra Sub-branch Secretary Craig Shannon.  Embassy officials refused to meet with the delegation and would not receive a protest letter.  The letter was, therefore, delivered to the Embassy via the police.
