It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John M. Bowers, who from 1987 until 2007, led the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) as its International President. He passed away on Sunday 21 August, 2011 aged 88 at his home on Long Island, NY.

John was widely recognised as a strong fighter for the rights of US longshoremen who appreciated the importance for his members of playing a role within the ITF. He served for over ten years on the Executive Board of the ITF where he was elected as a Vice President in March 1990 and re-elected in 1994, 1998 and 2002. He also held the position of Chair of the Dockers Section. The entire ITF family are sad to say goodbye but will not forget his contribution to international solidarity.
 
Both ITF President Paddy Crumlin and ITF General Secretary David Cockroft have sent letters of condolence to Harold Daggett, newly elected President of the ILA, expressing deepest sympathies to John’s family, friends and comrades at this sad time. The letters can be viewed as PDFs below.
