It is with great sadness that we announce that Gerhard Eggers, a leading member of the ITF/ETF affiliated FNV Bondgenoten union, and chair of the UPS European Works’ Council, passed away in hospital in Cologne on 8th June, following a heart attack. Gerhard was only 49 years old.

As a key player in the global UPS trade union network, Gerhard distinguished himself as a defender of trade union values and rights.

He was employed by UPS in 1998, elected a member of the UPS European Works Council in 2000, and then its chair in 2008. He not only developed an effective team spirit amongst his colleagues but also brought trade union values to the forefront of the Council's work. As an indication of the respect that he was held in by both friends and adversaries, UPS management flew flags at half-mast across the Netherlands.

ITF organising globally coordinator Ingo Marowsky paid tribute to him, saying: “All of us have lost a great trade unionist, some of us have lost a dear friend.”

He added: "Gerhard will be greatly missed by the many trade unionists with whom he worked and the many more who benefited from his help."
