Violence against women isn’t going away. Reports of incidents of physical, emotional, psychological and sexual abuse against women are more frequent than ever from ITF affiliates; experiences of women in their workplace but also in their homes and communities.

  • über die Kampagne

We need a collective, strategic union response to violence against women because, as unions, we have a collective responsibility to take action that will help to end it.

UN day for the elimination of violence against women on 25 November is an opportunity to take action on this issue and show support for other organisations that share our views and vision for a society without VAW.

There are a number of key values which underpin 25 November. These are that:

    • Violence against women is a human rights violation
    • Violence against women is a consequence of discrimination against women, in law and also in practice, and of persisting inequalities between men and women
    • Violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress in many areas, including poverty eradication, combating HIV/AIDS, and peace and security
    • Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential
    • Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.

Find out more about the campaign which is now in its sixteenth year.

We have to take action to end violence against women now. There are four things you can do to back November 25 and be part of the union response to violence against women:

    1. Share your story: We want to build a body of evidence that demonstrates the kind of challenges women transport workers face around violence in their daily lives. We also want to promotethe work you're doing and the successes you've had in overcoming these challenges. Email your story to women@itf.org.uk Stories can be shared anonymously.

    2. Orange your workplace: Like this! This is ITF staff oranging their workplace. Do the same on 25 November and share your pictures by emailing women@itf.org.uk or on social media with #ITFwomen #violenceagainstwomen #orangeday and don’t forget to tag @itfglobalunion

    3. Use this as the start or next step of a violence against women campaign where you are or to highlight an ongoing campaign or issue that's important to you: Use promotion and activities around 25 November as part of your own union campaign around violence against women. Go to the campaign materials area for resources and examples. Send details about your launch activities and anything you’ve got planned to women@itf.org.uk

    4. Continue to support the campaign to put gender based violence at work into international law: The ITUC (International trade union confederation) is campaigning for an International Labour Organization convention on gender based violence at work to raise the profile and offer protection. Find out more on what you can do to support.
