THE FUTURE OF WORK

Shaping a future with workers at its heart.

Technology has the power to transform how we transport goods and move people around the globe. It can enhance workers' jobs, increase people’s quality of life and enable better decision making. But without adequate regulation and oversight, technology can become a tool of surveillance, violate fundamental rights and discriminate against both the workers and users of transport systems.

Rather than being used to reorganise work, displace workers and erode workers’ rights, technology can improve productivity, safety and help tackle critical societal issues like decarbonisation.

Our position

Transport unions play a critical role in the future of work. Workers must be at the centre of decision making, shaping the future of transport, by ensuring that labour standards and regulation keep pace with emerging technology and new ways of working. Workers’ and users’ human rights to privacy and freedom of association must be protected so that technology does not further entrench the forms of exploitation and discrimination that exist in the world today.

At the ITF, we believe that workers play a critical role in developing and deploying technological change. They must have a seat at the table to ensure that technology advances decent work and upholds human rights. This can only be achieved through collective bargaining and effective regulation of new ways of working like the gig economy.
