I have had a phenomenal experience as a Young Maritime Worker. I have taken part in many young events - including an ITF Youth Conference held in Brussels and the MUA’s own Youth Conference, both held in 2008. I’m preparing for yet another conference in the coming months. I recently had an opportunity to work in the Maritime Union as an Organiser. Although I only tasted life as an Organiser for two weeks, but what a learning curve it was!

I inspected different vessels (so that they can be bought up to our standards), dealt with members’ issues with different companies and of course sat in on experienced members who handled negotiations between the company and the union.

Through being an active member of my union, I have had the privilege of participating in such events such as these.

The MUA have now set up their own State and National Youth Committees. I am part of the Western Australian Branch, which has been growing dramatically over the past few years. The youth entering the industry are starting to understand what our union is here for and taking an active role within us. Under the MUA Leadership the youth here are given many opportunities to progress within the union and strive for our success. I can’t speak for the other states of Australia, but in WA we have started youth fundraising, networking and are planning training. I am a proud member of my union and intent upon helping the working class.

Yours in Unity

George Gakis – Maritime Union Australia (WA Branch)
