Blossom Bell started her union work as Recruitment Assistant for Nautilus International, the UK, Dutch and Swiss maritime professionals’ union. Before working for Nautilus, Blossom worked as a Navigation Officer in the Merchant Navy having completed a three-year training programme in order to achieve all the required certification to sail as a qualified officer.

Since starting at Nautilus in May 2009, Blossom’s role has developed to include membership priorities for Nautilus as well as becoming the female liaison person for women members, secretary to the Nautilus Women’s Advisory Forum and soon to become secretary to the Nautilus Young Persons’ Advisory Forum which is currently being developed. It is her work with the young members which led to Blossom being a member of the ITF Young Workers’ Committee and being elected to the ITF Seafarers’ Section Committee as the Young Persons’ Representative in 2011; “being able to feed back to the Seafarers’ Section Committee the concerns, issues and aspirations of young seafarers internationally is fundamentally why the ITF youth committee was set up, to give young people a voice in decision-making committees, and I look forward to being that voice and to represent young seafarers internationally,” says Blossom.

In order for Blossom to be an effective member of the Seafarers’ Section Committee and represent young seafarers internationally, it is important that maritime trade union affiliates liaise with Blossom about their issues and concerns with regards to young seafarers. That is why the ITF has developed this area on the ITF Young Persons Extranet in order to do this. Alternatively, affiliates - in particular those responsible for the organising needs of young seafarers - can contact Blossom at bbell@nautilusint.org
