German railway unions GDBA and TRANSNET have been working together on their joint campaign to improve safety in railways. They supported the ITF campaign ‘Unions say NO to violence’ by following up their 2008 campaign to build awareness of the need for safe passenger transport.
The rail operators supported their action and 12 locations were selected from which to conduct a passenger survey.
3,372 passengers responded. The survey identified:
The unions restated the importance of the right of passenger and transport staff to be safe. Cost-cutting measures must not be at the expense of passengers or staff. They noted that vandalism and assaults (often due to technical deficiencies) damage the image of public transport companies. If problems continue passengers could seek other means of transport.
The survey reinforced the need to confront safety and security inadequacies now, before more passengers lose trust in public transport.

* In November 2010, the ITF-affiliated unions, Transnet and GDBA, inaugurated the new railway and transport union Eisenbahn- und Verkehrsgewerkschaft (EVG)
