A work stoppage by Colombian taxi drivers in protest over increasing incidences of violence has led to an agreement that will enhance security.
The drivers, represented by the ITF-affiliated Sindicato de Conductores de Taxi Cartagena (SINCONTAXCAR), staged their protest on 6 December in Cartagena from morning till noon. They were demanding that the authorities take steps to prevent violent attacks against drivers. The stoppage was prompted by the murder of two taxi drivers following an armed robbery; some 17 taxi cabs in the city have also been affected by robbery as a result of poor security.
The stoppage disrupted the journeys of hundreds of people. In response, Cartagena’s authorities immediately called a meeting with union leaders, during which it was agreed that a number of measures would be taken. These were: the creation of a network to support taxi drivers through a dedicated telephone helpline system, linked to the metropolitan police’s headquarters; permanent police squads in high crime spots and the establishment of a census of cab and taxi drivers who work in the city.
ITF Americas regional secretary Antonio Fritz added: “Taxi drivers in Cartagena have been fighting not only to get decent conditions, but also to increase the quality of the service provided to users and to improve security in a country that is marked by violence, especially anti-union violence. This stoppage shows that workers are fighting for their rights; at the same time they want to see a professionalised transport industry. These are messages that the ITF promotes”.
