The world has faced momentous changes in the last few months. The global economic crisis has left many workers worse off, without bringing corporate fat cats to account. The crisis has put a spotlight on globalisation. Now, more than ever, trade unions need to stand together and take a global approach to organising, just as business takes a global approach to employment.

The good news is that ITF-affiliated unions continue to work hard for their members, even in the most challenging situations. In this issue, we’re pleased to give you the inside story on the union campaigns that have really made a difference over the past year.

This includes the Satawu dockers in South Africa who stopped the Chinese ship, carrying arms that were destined for Zimbabwe, from unloading. It includes the brave union leaders at STEPQ in Guatemala, who carried on their work after the assassination of their colleague Pedro Zamora. And it includes the Turkish union members who would not be intimidated by union-busting tactics.

To achieve success, ITF affiliates need a chance to get together and share tactics. This is why the ITF runs a regular summer school. We spoke to some of the participants about their experiences. And if you’re interested in attending the 2009 summer school, look out for details from March.

Other world events have given the labour movement a boost. We hope that Barack Obama’s presidency will benefit trade unions in the US and beyond. And even before Obama’s election, US dockworkers’ union ILWU was able to negotiate an excellent pay deal for their members – they tell us more about how they achieved this.

The ILWU provided the cover picture for the magazine, and it sums up some of the important work the ITF is doing at the moment: encouraging young people to get involved in unions. Elaine Bernard urges us to “light fires” among union members; to encourage people to think of unions as a positive force for good, not just as a last resort to deal with problems and frustrations. We know that unions can make a real difference in the world; now we just have to make sure that potential union members know it too.
