- About these links
In Uganda the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) and the Uganda Railway Workers Union (URWU) are implementing a UNAIDS-sponsored project to take accessible information to transport workers all over the country.
Eight trained counsellors run awareness-raising seminars once a month, visiting three different sites (such as railway stations, union offices, and truck stops) each typically addressing 50 or so workers on each occasion. They also also visit women and children living in communities near the sites.
Following the seminars, the counsellors talk in confidence to knowingly HIV positive workers who come forward, and arrange tests for workers who decide they would like to know their status. They leave boxes of condoms for workers to take away.
The project also runs four community based drama groups which take awareness-raising drama shows into workplaces and communities. Both the ATGWU and the URWU continue to carry out negotiations with transport employers over workplace HIV/AIDS policies and programmes.
