Dear Colleagues, Brothers and Sisters, Comrades,

For all of us, any allegation of possible discrimination against a Trade Union activist or indeed racist behaviour by UPS management is unacceptable. We demand a solution to the case described below and that the company takes clear and timely steps to resolve this issue with the union, including a neutral investigation process in which all stakeholders can have confidence.

We expect a clear message from the company that the victimisation, racism and discrimination against Trade Union activists are unacceptable means of behaviour and have no place in the world of UPS.

We have received the attached publication from December 2009 from VERDI. As it is in German, we also attach a reading copy for your information. We note the developments at UPS in Cologne, the company’s major hub in Europe, with great concern. Many of you will remember Murat Sahin, who attended our global meeting in London in February of last year.

We are aware of the fact that, since publication of the article, an effort was initiated to achieve a solution to the case which is described in the article, through a mediation process between management and Murat Sahin. Murat himself has made a very clear proposal in relation to the composition of the mediation panel, in order to find a way forward. He keeps us informed about any steps being taken, and we are currently standing by for any update.
