Organising Attacked in Turkey
The ITF's aviation affiliate Hava-Is, in Turkey, is fighting anti-union practices by the low cost carrier company, SunExpress. The union is organising amongst the workforce and is currently building up a membership - but in response, the company has dismissed 6 airline employees, because they joined Hava-is.
The ITF has written a letter of complaint. Please write similar letters to SunExpress and its Chief Executive. ITf affiliates can use the text and fax number below; there is also an email protest available.

Dear Paul Schwaiger,
My union understands from the International Transport Workers Federation, that you have been intimidating workers in order to prevent them from joining a union, namely the ITF's affiliate Hava-is.
I also understand that you have been personally involved in this intimidation and harassment together with your Flight Operations Manager and Deputy General Manager and this has now culminated in the dismissal of six of your employees for expressing an interest in becoming union members.
We are shocked that such intimidation can take place in a country which is trying to join the European Union based on social dialogue.
This is a serious violation of the right to join a trade union, laid down by the United Nations in International Labour Organisation Conventions, which Turkey has ratified.
The ITF has recently written to you condemning these actions and requesting you to cease your anti-union intimidation.
My union wishes to reassert the ITF’s position, by calling upon you to cease this anti-union intimidation and to comply with international labour standards by reinstating the six SunExpress airline employees who have been dismissed.
We are ready to support our fellow affiliate Hava-Is and their members in any further international solidarity.
Yours etc.
