India

Report: Of the sectors, fishermen along the coasts suffered most of the fatalities. Union trying to gather information about fishing workers in the Andman Islands and the districts of Nagapatanam and Cuddalore. NUSI and the Maritime Union of India have set up a relief fund with the two employers organisations.

Report: Eight km. of rail tracks damaged but no railway worker casualties. Union in the forefront of organising relief work.

Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia Flight Attendant Association -IGAKI

Report: The union has been receiving food and medicine donations from people in Jakarta to transport them directly to Banda Aceh. The union negotiated an agreement with Garuda that crew suitcases carrying this material can be transported in addition to normal cargo and is looking at organising an airlift of aid boxes.

Report: Members' houses damaged by the Tsunami. In the province of Aceh, eleven local ports suffered heavy damages. One vessel owned by the Indonesian national shipping company was lost with 16 fatalities; seven were saved. MT Tirta Karsa, a small tanker, was lost with five crew.

Report: Here's some information regarding IKAGI Project for humanitarian aid in Banda Aceh.

As we've informed you in my previous e-mail concerning donation for the tsunami suvivors, we've transported all donations from IKAGI members and people around Jakarta, 295 boxes (cloth) and 114 boxes (food) have been sent to Banda Aceh succesfuly. In order to coordinate humanitarian aid distribution, I will go to Banda Aceh on 14 January 2005 and will stay there at least for a week.

Here's some information regarding IKAGI Project for humanitarian aid in Banda Aceh:

IKAGI still have USD 4210.52 in cash from donation. We decided to spent all of the money to buy supplies for the survivors which they needed most. During my stay I will collect data and find the way on how to make this long-term activity run efficiently and accepted by the right persons.

The ITF support and financial assistance for this humanitarian project is highly appreciated.

Sri Lanka

Report: Many members from rail and road sectors lost their lives and some from the ports in Galle and Trincomalee were lost.

Many Ceylon Transport Board drivers and conductors on duty on the roads in the coastal districts are still missing. Several union offices were wiped out.

Many stations and houses of railway staff near the stations were washed away. A train carrying 100 passengers was washed away near Telwatte, on the south western coast; two drivers and two guards were among the dead. Destruction of Railway property was extensive.

The unions have distributed aid and members are donating to the relief fund for reconstruction of homes. Fund details are: Current Account No. 1650029810, Peoples' Bank, Suduwella Branch Sri Lanka.
