The Royal Nepal Embassy/Consulate
10 February 2005
Dear Ambassador/Consul
I am writing to express my organisation’s urgent and strenuous protests against the suspension of trade union and democratic freedom’s in Nepal. We have been informed that trade union leaders, including the senior vice president of the NTUC, Mr Puskar Acharya, are in detention. Other union and political leaders are in hiding. Meetings of more than three people have been banned and communication with the outside world has largely been cut off.
We are aware that a country such as Nepal is faced by many problems, including a growing insurgency. We would point out that the suspension of democracy and the violation of basic human rights will do nothing to resolve these problems and will only result in the isolation of your monarchy by democratic governments and peoples around the world. Our organisation shall be exerting maximum pressure on our government to demand the immediate restoration of democratic government and rights in Nepal.
Yours sincerely
