To ITF-affiliated unions in the United States

Dear colleagues

Hurricane Katrina

I am writing on behalf of more than four million transport workers worldwide affiliated to the International Transport Workers’ Federation to express our deepest regret and sympathy at the ongoing tragedy affecting the lives and livelihoods of workers in the New Orleans area, following the Hurricane Katrina disaster this week.

The ITF’s members are deeply moved and shocked by the plight of the people of the southern United States, and also encouraged by those personal stories of self-sacrifice and humanity that have arisen out of the disaster.  We would like to convey our solidarity with efforts by the labour unions to organise and assist with relief efforts.

The ITF is ready to assist its US affiliates in any way it can – please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do

In solidarity

David Cockroft
General Secretary
