Canadian union CAW today announced that its membership had raised cdn $2,078,083.18 towards the Asian tsunami relief effort. The CAW National Union, CAW Council and the CAW-Social Justice Fund (SJF) matched workplace donations and individual contributions, amounting to a total of $1,741, 570.71. The Federal government augmented this sum with a further match of $336,512.57, leaving the final balance in excess of $2 million Canadian dollars.

An immediate donation of $894,000 has been sent for humanitarian relief, but the CAW International Department intends to conduct a thorough evaluation before assigning the remainder of the fund. It is particularly keen to contribute towards long-term rebuilding and resettlement projects that are being developed in conjunction with communities affected by the disaster.
