Action Alert: Civil aviation workers in Indonesia

Title

Dear Affiliates,

Our affiliate union Ikatan Awak Kabin Garuda Indonesia (IKAGI), which represents members in Garuda International Airlines continues to be subjected to anti trade union practices, which we believe to be in breach of the ILO Conventions 87 and 98.  In recent months there have been a number of attacks on our members which include:

  • Action by 50 cabin crew members who distributed trade union pamphlets to passers-by, during their time off – was said by the company to be “counter-productive.”
  • The forced closure of the IKAGI office during the August dispute by the company
  • In September 2005, the company invited 15 cabin crew members, who had participated in a trade union demonstration - also during their time off - for “interviews”.
  • Since November 2005, the company sanctioned nine union activists by cutting their wages for 6 months; we understand that these members were Gilda Gisa, Deeby Giroth, Deiby Tangeren, Natalia, Kristina, Erwan, Dandit Solikhah, Geibi Kalangi and Bely Vieira, and most recently on 19th December, Haryo Santoso (IKAGI General Secretary) has also had his wages reduced by 10% for 6 months.
  • Two union representatives, Mona Lapian and Yuli Winarko, have been threatened with dismissal for participating in trade union activities.

Because of the continuing situation with our affiliate IKAGI, we are now alerting our affiliates in other airlines and airports worldwide - especially Garuda International destinations  - about this dispute and about the intransigent position of Garuda management and ask you to take appropriate action to demonstrate your support for IKAGI.

Please let us know  which form of action you have taken in support of our affiliate IKAGI (by emailing us at aviation@itf.org.uk or by fax on +44 20 7357 7871). If you wish to send a protest letter to the President and the company, a model text can be found below.
