24 February 2005

The ITF is calling on ITF affiliates to demonstrate your solidarity with MAS cabin crew employees.

Despite approaches by both Malaysia’s transport minister and the ITF, discriminatory practices continue at Malaysian Airlines. Namely that female cabin crew employees, who are sixty per cent of the workforce, are forced to retire at 40 years of age compared with the retirement age for male cabin crew at 55 years of age. We are also aware that MAS cabin crew employees are limited to when and how many children they can have, and that pregnant women are not redeployed to other duties, but instead are forced to take seven months unpaid leave.

As a result, the ITF’s civil aviation unions have now decided that, should immediate action not be forthcoming to resolve the situation, Malaysian Airlines will be designated as a campaign target.

The ITF has already sent a letter to MAS. As a first step in targeting MAS, we urge the ITF family to send similar letter with copies also sent to the Prime Minister and Minister of Labour (see Annex 1) to:

Dato' Ahmad Fuaad bin Mohd Dahalan
Managing Director, Malaysia Airlines
33rd Floor, Bangunan, MAS
Jalan Sultan Ismail
50250 Kuala Lumpur
MALAYSIA
Fax: +603 2161 3472/603 2162 8305

Thank you for you attention
