Background

23 February 2012:  Unions stand by aviation workers in Ecuador. Across South America, aviation unions representing LAN and TAM workers last week came out in support of 80 Aerolane/LAN Ecuador workers. Read more here.

14 February 2012: Day of action against dismissals. A year to the day after they were legally recognised, ITF affiliate SITA organises demonstration in front of LAN Ecuador offices, Guayaquil. ITF affiliates are called on to express international solidarity.

25 January 2012: SITA alerts the ITF to mass dismissals at LAN-Ecuador, a subsidiary of LAN Airlines. In total 80 workers are dismissed – among them 55 cabin crew, of which 49 are union members and 2 union leaders.
 
Beginning of January 2012: LAN-Ecuador are due to implement agreements made with SITA on salaries for aviation workers, cabin crew, maintenance, ground staff and ticketing workers.
 
24/25 November 2011: Union leaders representing the ITF LATAM network from Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay meet in Ecuador to express solidarity and support SITA members’ continued organising efforts.
 
14 December 2011: Merger of leading Latin American airline LAN and TAM Airlines completed to form LATAM Airlines Group, or LATAM.
 
14 February 2011: SITA – representing at least 70% of LAN Ecuador cabin crew – is legally recognised. View SITA’s union films here.

July 2010: The LAN organising project with the support of the LAN network comprised of ITF aviation unions in Latin America bears fruit: the creation of a new union and ITF affiliate in Ecuador – SITA – representing LAN-Ecuador workers and led by female General Secretary, Jimena Lopez.
 
January 2008: ITF aviation unions in Latin America commence a 3-year organising drive in LAN Airlines, Chile’s leading national carrier, predicted to expand operations and dominate the Latin America market.
