- About these links
Most seafarers centres rely on effective transport to get the seafarers from the ship to the centre and back again to fit in with the tight schedule of the ship and the needs of the seafarers to get ashore. Vehicles are therefore a vital part of assisting seafarers to find the services that they need in a foreign port.
The ITF Seafarers’ Trust paid EUR 21,058 (GBP 19,125) in April 2010 for a new vehicle for the International Seamen’s Club – Stella Maris – in the Port of Santurce, Bilbao, Spain. Their old vehicle had broken down and it was not worth repairing, as there can be a considerable distance from the wharfs to their seafarers’ centre and with around 10 ships visiting the port daily and transporting about 40 seafarers per day, they needed a good replacement.
Arantza, the centre’s administrator, remembers a Filipino seafarer commenting happily on the fact that the windows in the new van can be opened; other seafarers had good comments on how comfortable the new vehicle is and welcomed the air conditioning, which hadn’t been working in the old vehicle for sometime.
Between 1984 and 2010 the centre has received 5 grants for 2 vehicles, telecommunications and entertainment equipment, and sports facilities.
Fr Joseba Beobide, the Port Chaplain and Centre’s Director says ‘We want to express our gratitude for the van that we have been able to buy thanks to your grant. We certainly appreciate your help. The van is now working daily covering most of our wharfs and docks. We make between 50 – 70 Kms. daily.” Recently they had taken a seafarer to see the doctor as he was feeling unwell.
The International Seamen’s Club – Stella Maris – Santurce, Bilbao provides telephone service, internet, post office, shop, bar, newspapers and magazines, library, tv, and indoor and outdoor games; they also provide legal assistance, ecumenical services on board ship upon request, or transport to the local church Sunday mass and ship visiting. Their club’s doors are open daily from 10 am – 3 pm and 5pm – 10 pm.
