Russia
From 6 to 12 October 2011, the local organisations of the Motor Transport and Road Workers' Union of Russia (MTRWUR) organised various activities in the framework of the ITF Road Transport Action Week, including meetings and rallies to demand a stop to the increase in fuel prices and to increase the wages for transport workers. The union also highlighted their demand to the administration of transport enterprises and local authorities to improve working conditions of women conductors and trolleybus/tram drivers. Over 300,000 signatures against the rocketing fuel prices were forwarded to the President and Prime Minister of Russia. Belgium, Netherlands, France
BTB (Belgium), FNV Bondgenoten (Netherlands) and CGT Transports (France) have organised joint activity during the Action Week against social dumping with the aim of putting pressure on those with political responsibility to address the issue in the road transport sector and to highlight the issue to drivers. In Kruibeke, Kalken, Blandain and Hzeldonk, 100 activists from the three unions distributed leaflets in 14 languages renouncing social dumping and calling upon drivers to 'stand up for their rights'. Banners were also placed on bridges over the motorways. (Email report by Dinneke Fleerackers)
Finland
On 10-11 October, officials, members and management representatives of the Finnish Transport Workers' Union AKT visited major bus stations, heavy traffic gas stations and the Port of Vuosaari and organised soup or other food for drivers. During the two days, the union representatives met with about 600 drivers and shared information on driving safety. With winter on its way, the union also gave drivers a scraper to remove ice from their windscreens as a gift. Generally, drivers reacted very positively to the campaign. (Email report by Hilkka Ahde)

Chile
On 7 october, Federación Nacional de Sindicatos de Conductores de Buses, Camiones, Actividades Afines y Conexas de Chile (FENASICOCH/SITRACH) carried out a campaign at the main tollgates of Chile. The campaign was very important in Chile because the activities were carried out in conjunction with the Labour Minister, Labour National Director and the Executive Secretary of the National Committee Security of the Transport Minister who all gave their support to the campaign and participated in activities. Mexico
In addition to action to mark the ITF Taxi Workers' Day, ATM has been organising various activities during the Action Week. On 7 October, ATM, along with other union organisations and in coordination with the Union Nacional de Trabajadores, participated in a seminar on 'union challenges and proposals for decent work' to commemorate the World Day for Decent Work. ATM also distributed leaflets on the ITF Action Week, climate change, Quality Public Services and HIV/AIDS. On 8 October, the union visited the North Bus Station where the union distributed information to load transport drivers and public transport drivers (bus, taxi). The union also visited a central cargo transport area where loaded trailers arrive from different parts of the country. In both locations, ATM representatives discussed the themes of the Action Week with drivers on a one-to-one basis and in groups. Union leaflets and campaign posters were also distributed. On 11 October, ATM visited Mexico City's wholesale food market where they spoke to load transport drivers about the Action Week. On 12 October, the union visited the Public Transport Subway System and the Electric Tram Terminal and spoke to the drivers and system operators. (Email report by Alma Teresa Gonzalez Avilez)

Kenya
The Kenya Long Distance Truck Drivers and Allied Workers' Union, in conjuction with the National Road Safety Council, held a series of meetings with stakeholders of the northern corridor to discuss issues of road safety and how they can be minimized. During the Action Week on 11-14 October, union representatives distributed ITF campaign information and met with the Transporters Association, truck drivers, dock workers' union and the provincial administration in Mombasa to map the way forward. Ethiopia
As part of its activities for the Action Week, the Transport & Communication Workers' Unions Industrial Federation (TCWTUIF) has organised occupational health & safety awareness training on 13-14 October in Addis Ababa, together with the Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs and the Federal Road Transport Authority. 45 drivers from 18 unions participated in the training. Prior to the training, the ITF 'Safety Now!' posters were displayed at different organisations and safety leaflets were distributed in the community. A panel discussion is planned next week. Nepal
On 14 October, NETWON mobilised taxi workers to participate in a taxi rally in Biratnagar City. Approximately 60 taxis participated in the rally, which moved for 2 kilometres in the city area raising various issues that are experienced by taxi workers, including parking problems, working time, road safety, and harassment by traffic police. Union activists distributed leaflets to the public, passengers, traffic police and journalists. Traffic police also participated in the rally and committed to take action to solve these problems. India
The Indian National Transport Workers' Federation has organised a range of different activities for the Action Week to highlight different issues linked to the main campaign slogan "Safety Now!". For example, a seminar was held on combatting HIV/AIDS in the road transport industry and group discussions were used to formulate a strategy for future action. One thousand leaflets on HIV/AIDS were distributed to drivers, other staff and commuters at the bus stand. A public meeting was also held at the bus stand , where prominent speakers talked about the theme of the Action Week and union activists talked to workers. Hundreds of leaflets were also distributed by the union during the Action Week on 'fatigue kills!'. On violence at work, a group of workers submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the District Magistrate to request that the problems of road transport workers be resolved. ITF campaign posters were displayed at workplaces. Media coverage of the activities in print and electronic media was very good. (Email report by Sanjay Verma)
