Women in the Railways

A meeting of women railway workers is scheduled for 9 December 2008, prior to the ITF Railway Workers' Section Conference in Curitiba (Brazil) on 10-12 December 2008.

The meeting will examine issues for women workers in the workplace and discuss strategies for involving women workers including structures, education and campaigns in order to come up with a work programme and action points.

In preparation for the meeting, unions are invited to respond to a questionnaire on women in the railways. This questionaire was sent to all ITF unions in the Railway Workers' Section as Circular No.153/Rw.20/2008 on 17 September 2008. The questionnaire looks at where women are in the railway industry, the impact of railway restructuring, workplace issues (such as maternity and pregnancy, gender discrimination and sexual harassment and violence against women), and representation of women in the union.

PDF version of questionnaire available for download - see below

Respond online >>

This questionnaire is designed to complement the ITF Gender Equality Testing in Transport Survey and so we would also encourage your union to respond to this questionnaire if you have not already done so.

The answers to the questionnaires will inform the discussion at the women’s meeting, and we therefore ask you to respond to it irrespective of your union’s participation in the conference.

Railway unions can nominate participant/s and indicate accommodation requirements for the meetings by registering online >>

Thank you in advance for your cooperation

Equality testing
Between 1998-2002, the ITF surveyed its affiliates on gender equality provisions in transport companies. The findings, published in the report 'Equality testing in Transport', showed that many women workers recognised that they have rights in theory but not in practice. Justice for Pedro Zamora and STEPQ
Join the ITF in calling for justice in Guatemala. Pedro Zamora, General Secretary of the Dockers' union STEPQ, was brutally murdered in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, while driving his two children from the port hospital. Now, other union leaders face similar threats of violence. We must ensure the guilty are brought to justice ¡No hay impunidad! more >>
