Turkish justice 'on trial' tomorrow as anti-union court case verdict approaches
16/01/12
A long-expected verdict in an Ankara court tomorrow will put Turkish justice on trial, international global union federation the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has warned.
In 2007 18 activists from the ITF-affiliated TÜMTIS trade union were taken into custody and seven were consequently arrested on trumped up organised crime charges after trying to represent workers at the Horoz Lojistik Kargo Hizmetleri ve Ticaret A.Ş logistics company. The complaint was made to the police by the company itself. After being held for more than 200 days the men were released on bail in 2008 and all returned to their trade union duties. The charges that they were gangsters engaged in organised crime are now being heard, and a verdict is expected tomorrow.
ITF general secretary David Cockroft commented: “The ITF has followed this case from the beginning, including sending senior ITF and ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) representatives to examine the facts and offer support. The message that emerged from that is that the case against the men is not even tissue-thin. It is, we believe, a clear frame-up carried out by the local police at the behest of a company that didn’t want its workers to have the choice of whether or not to belong to a trade union.”
He continued: “In most countries this case would have been laughed out of court. If tomorrow it isn’t then Turkey’s national reputation will take a grave blow and we and our colleagues in TÜMTIS will take it to the Supreme Court and beyond until these innocent men are freed.”
