‘Fatigue kills’ action week begins Monday

07/10/05

A worldwide union week of action for safer roads and improved working conditions begins on Monday.  Organised by the ITF, the International Road Transport Action Week (10 to 16 October 2005) has grown from the former one day ‘Fatigue Kills’ actions in order to accommodate the growing numbers of participants and the inclusion of a new message ‘Organising Globally – Building Union Power’.

As part of the event hundreds of trade unions around the world will warn that driver fatigue is a killer, campaign for better work conditions, and for professional drivers to join trade unions which can safeguard or fight for decent working hours. Participants decide the best way to get the message across in their own countries.

Planned events include leafleting of drivers and the general public, rallies, pickets, mass lobbies seminars, and an international driver survey. Up to the minute details of what’s on are at  www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/road.cfm

ITF Inland Transport Section Secretary, Mac Urata, commented: “This is a global event with multiple aims and its expansion to a whole week shows how it has grown in response to the demand among participants to stage even more ambitious actions and reach the widest audience.”

He continued: “We are expecting a high turnout at a multitude of events that range from border blockades in Spain to an international health and safety rally in Kenya. Many dockers’ unions are also helping us, including those in Japan and Panama. It is an excellent sign of cooperation as the ITF and its affiliated unions increasingly aim to involve workers in the logistics industry, many of whom are not represented by unions.”
