Update on Turkish UPS workers’ struggle
30/09/10
The ITF today issued the following update on its campaign in support of sacked UPS workers in Turkey, ahead of a meeting this Saturday, 2 October, between UPS management and the TÜMTIS trade union:
The ITF and its European arm, the ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) welcome the negotiations and back TÜMTIS in its desire for a mutually-accepted agreement on the reinstatement of UPS workers. They urge UPS to resolve this issue with the utmost urgency, and remind the company that under Turkish Labour Law, it is jointly liable with subcontractor companies for the fair treatment of its employees.
TÜMTIS has submitted 136 lawsuits for workers’ reinstatement so far, and the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s inspectors have already found that eight workers were wrongfully dismissed. The remaining cases are under investigation.
The ITF is closely following the situation in Turkey and has asked its affiliated unions to be on alert for further action if no satisfactory progress is made. A global solidarity delegation will travel to Istanbul on 9 and 10 October, during the ITF’s International Action Week.
TÜMTIS President Kenan Ozturk visited the ETF headquarters in Brussels this week. TÜMTIS received full support from the ETF, which endorsed the ITF Emergency Resolution on the UPS dispute from its 42nd Congress in August in Mexico City, and called upon its affiliates to support the UPS campaign and send participants to be part of the global solidarity delegation to Istanbul. Kenan Ozturk also met with and received support from the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), ETUC (European Trade Union Confederation) and the Workers' Group of the EESC (European Economic and Social Council).
