Transport unions commit to World AIDS Day
30 novembre 2009
The ITF and its member trade unions are once again committing themselves to fighting HIV/AIDS and the prejudice that accompanies it. Transport workers are often disproportionately affected by HIV and the ITF has for the last 10 years actively worked against its spread through education projects, films and innovative campaigns (see www.itfglobal.org/in-focus/index.cfm/themeid/13).
Dr Syed Asif Altaf, ITF Global HIV/AIDS Project Coordinator, commented: “The ITF is committed to combatting HIV/AIDS, to promoting rights based approaches, pushing for confidentiality and privacy and ensuring equitable access to HIV/AIDS services. Once again on this latest World AIDS Day, the ITF, joined by its affiliated unions, is continuing its long-term campaign on HIV/AIDS, with a specific focus on challenging stigma and discrimination at workplaces.”
He continued: “The epidemic has stabilised globally, albeit at an unacceptably high level, but in many countries the numbers affected continue to rise. Gains have been made in access to treatment, especially for pregnant women, but the stark truth is that for every two people who go onto antiretroviral medication five more are newly infected.”
He concluded: “The ITF, as part of the Global Union AIDS Programme, strongly believes we have the right to information, education and practical support on HIV/AIDS. And with them comes the responsibility to examine our own behaviour and the risks we take, as well as the risks we impose on others. Above all we have the responsibility to help create an accepting and enabling environment that allows us all to break the silence and openly discuss HIV/AIDS and the support of co-workers who are living with HIV.”
