Nordic week of action update – 23 September 2009
23 September 2009
The 2009 Nordic week of action today reaches its halfway point with the inspection teams continuing their work in ports across 10 countries. Yesterday, some 61 ships were visited.
Early reports indicate that some technical deficiencies discovered by the action teams have now been rectified and at least two new agreements have been secured for seafarers on board the vessels visited. On one ship, US$4,000 of back pay was also obtained for the crew.
As well as the ship inspections, the action teams have also organised meetings and short get-togethers with the region’s dock workers in order to raise awareness of the Flags of Convenience campaign. These briefings will help to build on the week of action’s success and ensure its impact is sustained beyond the event itself.
