ITF condemns Honduras coup, organises protests (También en version española)

Global union federation the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has condemned the military coup d’etat in Honduras and is working with its member unions and other democratic institutions to resist it.
The Federation’s first steps have been to call on the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the President of the Honduran Congress to declare the military’s action illegal and indefensible, and to issue an urgent action alert to the ITF’s 656 member trade unions asking for their support in backing those trying to reestablish democracy in the country – including fellow ITF member unions within Honduras. The alert also mobilises the ITF’s worldwide membership to protest against the illegal grab of power and seek the support of their own governments.
Antonio Fritz, ITF Inter-American Regional Secretary, explained the background to the coup: “President Zelaya wanted to have a referendum for the population to vote on whether or not to modify the constitution, despite army and parliamentary opposition. His answer to them was that in a democracy it was for the people to decide. The military’s response has been to take power at gunpoint, make widespread arrests and kidnap and deport the President. We have also been informed that in an attempt to legalise the coup, an illegal decision of parliament has been taken, nominating a usurper, a puppet replacement for the genuine head of state.”
“Our colleagues in Honduras have called a general strike and are demonstrating everywhere against this coup, but the army are making widespread arrests, switching off phones and imposing a curfew. Trade unionists are preparing to strike and thousands have been out on the streets since yesterday, despite the torrential rain. We are obviously deeply worried for the safety of all those legally protesting against this blatantly criminal takeover. Our fear is that the army will attack them and the wider civil society.”
In his letter to the emergency session of the OAS and the Honduran Congress (available in Spanish on request from Dawson_sam@itf.org.uk), ITF General Secretary David Cockroft stated:
“We want to make the strongest protest against the cowardly acts taking place in Honduras, where a group of officers and some politicians, presumably corrupt, have violated the rule of law.
“As an international trade union federation we believe in democracy, in the right of people to choose their representatives, in the right of to self determination and to lay out laws in a democratic manner, as the government of President Zelaya was planning to do.
“This illegal and immoral act must be internationally condemned.
“We have also been informed that there will be an attempt to legalise the military coup through an illegal decision of parliament to remove the president from his role in a way that it not only immoral but also violates human rights, and which can only be understood in the context of parliamentarians acting under the threat of being kidnapped (as has happened to ambassadors of other countries and to ministers of state) leading them, through fear, to accept this action which rides roughshod over the nation’s constitution.”

La federación sindical global ITF (Federación Internacional de los Trabajadores del Transporte) condena el golpe de Estado en Honduras y está trabajando con sus organizaciones afiliadas y otras instituciones democráticas para combatirlo.
La primera acción de la ITF ha sido solicitar ante el Secretario General de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y ante el presidente del Congreso de Honduras que esta acción militar se declare ilegal e inmoral y se emita una acción urgente de alerta para las 656 organizaciones afiliadas a la ITF solicitando su apoyo para respaldar a aquellos que intentan reestablecer la democracia en el país, incluyendo a las organizaciones afiliadas de la ITF en Honduras. Esta alerta también moviliza a los miembros de la ITF de todo el mundo para protestar contra la toma ilegal de poder y buscar el apoyo de sus propios gobiernos.
Antonio Fritz, Secretario Regional Interamericano, explicaba los antecedentes del golpe: “El Presidente Zelaya quería realizar un referéndum para que la población votara a favor o en contra de la reforma de la constitución, pese a la oposición del ejército y el parlamento. Su respuesta ante ellos fue que en un sistema democrático es la gente quien debe decidir. La respuesta militar ha consistido en tomar el poder a punta de pistola, realizar detenciones generalizadas y el secuestro y deportación del Presidente. También nos han informado que en un intento de legalizar el golpe militar, se ha adoptado una decisión ilegal del parlamento, nombrando a un usurpador, una marioneta para sustituir al auténtico jefe del estado.”
“En Honduras, nuestros compañeros y compañeras han convocado una huelga general y se están manifestando por toda Honduras contra este golpe”. Los sindicalistas se están preparando para la huelga y miles de personas han salido a las calles desde ayer, a pesar de la lluvia torrencial. Obviamente, estamos profundamente preocupados por la seguridad de todos y todas aquellas que protestan legalmente contra este golpe criminal. Nuestro mayor temor es que el ejército realice ataques contra ellos y contra la sociedad civil.
En su carta para la sesión de urgencia de OEA y el Congreso de Honduras (disponible en Español, bajo solicitud previa a Dawson_sam@itf.org.uk), David Cockroft declaraba:
Ante la gravedad de esos hechos, deseamos expresar nuestra mas enérgica protesta por los cobardes acontecimientos que están sucediendo en Honduras, donde un grupo de militares y algunos políticos, presumiblemente corruptos, han violentado el Estado de Derecho.
Como Federación Sindical Internacional creemos en la vida democrática, en el derecho que tiene el pueblo de elegir a sus Representantes, en el derecho insoslayable de la autodeterminación y de elegir sus leyes en forma democrática, tal y como el gobierno del Presidente Zelaya planeaba hacerlo.
Los actos ilegales e inmorales para robarle al pueblo el derecho de la autodeterminación, masacrando a la democracia, para hacer un botín de la nación, es algo que debe de ser condenado internacionalmente.
Adicionalmente, hemos sido informados a través de los medios de comunicación, de que habría una intentona de legalizar el golpe militar, a través de una supuesta e ilegal decisión del Parlamento de cesar al Presidente de su cargo, en forma no solo inmoral ya que viola el derecho humano del debido proceso, sino además, se puede entender que algunos parlamentarios antes las amenazas de ser secuestrados, como ha sido el caso de Embajadores de Países Extranjeros y Ministros de Estado, hayan por temor, aceptado este acto que violenta a la Constitución del País.
