May Day launch for Farsi trade union guide

30 April 2009

The ITF and Dutch union the FNV will launch a trade union history in Farsi tomorrow, May Day, following a request from union leader Mansour Osanloo..

The book – Solidarity: The First 100 Years of the International Transport Workers' Federation – will be distributed by workers inside Iran and made available online so that it can be used within the country to help workers in their struggle for trade union rights and independent trade unions. It is intended to aid them by highlighting the experiences of other unions in times of struggle, and the role that their colleagues worldwide can play in helping them.

Mac Urata, ITF Inland Transport Secretary, commented: “We release this book on May Day to commemorate all those who have dedicated and continue to dedicate their lives to workers’ movements around the world.”

“When Mansour Osanloo visited London and Brussels in 2007 he told us he wanted an educational resource that he and his colleagues could use to learn about the history of workers’ struggles. This book, with its history of how unions confronted fascism and repression, was the one he identified. This Farsi edition would not have been possible without the help of the FNV, which in 2008 granted Mansour Osanloo its Febe Elisabeth Velasquez Award.  This publication is a part of its prize. Many thanks are due to our colleagues in Iran and abroad for their help in preparing it.”

Solidarity: The First 100 Years of the International Transport Workers' Federation can be read in Farsi at http://www.itfglobal.org/infocentre/itf100.cfm and http://www.itfglobal.org/additional/index.cfm/languageID/27/page/2063
