Baltic Sea action begins
6 October 2008
Trade unions affiliated to the ITF today launched a Baltic Sea week of action and inspected 59 ships in ports in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Russia.
Among the vessels visited was the Cape Belle, which belongs to the Eastwind, identified by the Federation of Korean Seafarers’ Unions as having rejected all approaches to discuss negotiating collective bargaining agreements. ITF inspector Andrey Chernov boarded the vessel in Klaipeda but was refused sight of crew lists, and it will again be checked on arrival at its next port of call, St Petersburg.
In Russia, the ITF coordinator is assisting crew members on the Transexpress, who are fighting for their wages. They were interviewed by two Russian TV stations.
