ITF keeps a close eye on West Coast negotiations
2 July 2008
The ITF is monitoring closely the negotiations between its affiliate, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) following the expiry of the current employment contract on 1 July.
The ILWU has announced that dockworkers will continue loading and unloading cargo to keep ports operating while the union continues to negotiate. It has also stated the commitment of its Negotiation Committee to keep working hard to reach a fair and reasonable agreement.
The ITF expressed its commitment to back the ILWU at this crucial time at a recent Dockers’ Section Conference in Stockholm. The conference delegates unanimously passed a resolution pledging international solidarity. The resolution also called on the PMA and its member companies to exhaust all means to negotiate in good faith with the ILWU in order to avoid the conflict like the one in 2002 (see below).
David Cockroft, General Secretary of the ITF, said, ‘There is significant interest in the West Coast talks amongst ITF unions and we are watching developments closely. We hope for a positive outcome to the negotiations soon.’
