Maritime week of action kicks off across N Euro ports

Reports are coming in from participants in the maritime week of action (4 to 8 June) that began today across Northern Europe. ITF inspectors, dockers and union volunteers are checking ships in Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and the UK (see www.itfglobal.org/press-area/index.cfm/pressdetail/1328 or the dedicated web page at www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/newa.cfm for more details).

Steve Cotton, ITF Maritime Coordinator, commented: “Right across the target area teams have been busy pushing forward the aims of this campaign.”

Initial reports of developments include the following (as of 17:10 BST):

Latvia: Incorporate M/v Tramp – Vct 7604831 in the existing fleet agreement (LSMUF TCC). Four vessels in total visited.
Netherlands: M/v Geestdijk – ABB Flag, not operated for four hours, ship without agreement, negotiation with the shipowner to cover the vessel , possible further delay on cargo operation.
UK/Ireland: Ship visits in the UK, combined action Ireland/UK on M/v Celtic Star. Ferry dispute forced the company to increase the wages to the crew at TCC level, however, no agreement signed yet.
France: Visits scheduled in various ports from tomorrow.
Belgium:  11 Vessels visited
Lithuania: Two ships visited
Poland: Three ships visited , M/v Peru ABB flag not operated by local dockers for two hours, negotiation with the owner ongoing.
Norway: Two cruise vessels visited
Russia: M/v Garm: Standard agreement signed
